Understanding Carpenter Ants
Being one of the largest ants that can be found in the United States, carpenter ants are known to invade and cause damages to many homes and buildings.
As there are many different species of carpenter ants, the size and color vary as well. The most common carpenter ants in the US, which is the black carpenter ants, is about one-half inch long, with a shiny black body. Other kinds of carpenter ants will probably be smaller in size, ranging from one quarter to half-inch and has other colors such as reddish brown.
Carpenter ants can take many types of food. They can eat honeydew from aphids, sweets, meat, fats as well as living and dead insects. Many people thought that they eat wood as well since they hollow and damage it, but, in reality, they don’t eat wood. They damage the wood as they want to nest beneath it.
When constructing their nest, carpenter ants will hollow out dead tree limbs, logs, posts, landscaping timbers and wood used in homes and other structures. They remove wood in the form of a coarse sawdust-like material, which they push from the nest and that may also consist of dead ants, insects and foods as well.
If you found carpenter ants in your home during the winter, chances are they come from nests somewhere within the house whereas during spring or summer times, those found indoors could be invaders wandering in from outdoors or from a nest in the wall or ceiling.
Locating the source of carpenter ants is as important as it is difficult. It is especially difficult if only a few ants are seen at one time. It is good that you spend time observing ants to see if you can detect a pattern of movement and trace back to their nest.
While it is not easy to find and locate the nest of carpenter ants, it does pay to check carefully before it make any serious damages to your home.
